I can relate to your feelings Claire. I live in an old neighborhood with lots of trees that fall during major storms. Whenever they remove a fallen tree, I think about how that tree has seen so much in it's hundreds of years of life.

What a moving recommendation. Going on my TBR. I’m sorry you had to say goodbye to the tree. It’s a loss.

I just gave my dad Amy Stewart’s The Tree Collectors for his birthday. She illustrates 50 people around the world who “collect” trees in one way or another. It’s a cool project. https://www.amystewart.com/books/the-tree-collectors/

How to Fail is a great podcast. I really enjoyed her interviews with Gladys McGarey and Meg Mason (careful, this one had me sobbing in my car).

So sorry for your loss. And/but this made me LOL: “I promise I won’t write a novel from the perspective of a tree, but could I?”

I know your loss. My neighbour’s elegant spruce toppled my fence during a December high wind several years ago. I loved it as it was beautiful and provided a natural barrier between the houses. The crows had a lament as well. It had been a nesting spot for many years. I loved The Overstory and The Island of Missing Trees. Thinking of your NS cottage spruce that is a strong survivor. Thr Giving Tree is a gem!!! Thanks for the interesting list.

Moving post, Claire. I think I lean toward the same definition of empathy. In terms of books you've missed, going way back, I thought of The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. That story affected me greatly when I was growing up.

Shel Silverstein, of course! It's a touch point for so many people.

Greenwood has been on my to-be/read shelf for a while - thanks for the nudge!
